Terms of Use

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using metaphore.app and any related services, applications, CLI tools, bots, browser extensions, or APIs (collectively, "the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Description of Service

metaphore transforms technical complexity into human understanding through analogies, structured stories, and audience-adapted explanations. The Service is available through multiple channels including a website, command-line interface (CLI), Telegram bot, and browser extensions. Some features require a paid subscription.

3. Accounts and Registration

Certain features of the Service require you to create an account. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity under your account. You must provide accurate and complete information when registering and keep it up to date.

4. Subscriptions and Billing

metaphore offers free and paid subscription plans. Paid plans are billed monthly or annually through our payment processor, Stripe. By subscribing to a paid plan, you authorize us to charge the applicable fees to your chosen payment method.

Free tier: limited number of transformations with basic features. You provide your own LLM API key.
Pro plan: unlimited transformations, full output format, history, presets, and export. You provide your own LLM API key.
Team plans: multi-seat access with shared workspaces, team administration, and analytics.

metaphore uses a Bring Your Own LLM (BYOLLM) architecture. You provide your own API key for a supported LLM provider (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI). LLM inference costs are billed directly to you by your chosen provider. metaphore does not charge for or markup LLM usage.

Prices are listed on the Service and may change with 30 days' notice. You will not be charged a higher rate until your next billing cycle after the notice period.

5. Cancellation and Refunds

You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account settings or by contacting us. Upon cancellation, you retain access to paid features until the end of your current billing period. No prorated refunds are issued for partial billing periods.

If you believe a charge was made in error, contact us within 14 days for review.

6. Usage Limits and API Keys

Each plan includes defined usage limits (e.g., number of transformations). If you exceed your plan's limits, the Service may temporarily restrict access until the next billing period or until you upgrade. We reserve the right to enforce rate limits to maintain service quality.

You are responsible for your own LLM API key and any costs incurred with your LLM provider. metaphore transmits your API key to the LLM provider solely to execute your transformation request. Your API key is used in transit only and is not stored by metaphore. You are responsible for keeping your API key confidential and for any usage charges from your LLM provider.

7. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or to violate any applicable law or regulation.
Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service, other accounts, or related systems.
Interfere with or disrupt the Service or overload our infrastructure.
Resell, sublicense, or redistribute access to the Service without prior written consent.
Use automated means to access the Service outside of the provided CLI, API, or bot interfaces.

8. Intellectual Property

The metaphore methodology and universal prompt are released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). You may share and adapt the methodology for non-commercial purposes with attribution and under the same license.

9. Your Content and Output

You retain ownership of the input you provide to the Service. The output generated by metaphore based on your input is provided for your use. You may use, share, or publish the output as you see fit, subject to any applicable third-party rights in your original input.

We do not claim ownership over your inputs or outputs. We may use anonymized, aggregated usage data to improve the Service.

10. AI and Third-Party Models

The Service uses third-party large language models (LLMs) to generate explanations. While we design our prompts and methodology carefully, outputs are generated by AI and may occasionally contain inaccuracies. The Service is not a substitute for professional advice.

11. Limitation of Liability

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the maximum extent permitted by law, metaphore and its creator(s) shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits or revenue arising from your use of the Service.

Our total aggregate liability for any claim arising from these Terms shall not exceed the amount you have paid us in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim.

12. Modifications

We may update these Terms at any time. Material changes will be communicated via the Service or by email at least 30 days before taking effect. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

13. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service if you violate these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination (including intellectual property, limitation of liability, and governing law) will remain in effect.

14. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any dispute arising from these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the judicial district of Montreal, Quebec.
